Private Collection Efforts By The IRS

The IRS announced on October 4, 2016, the intent to begin private collection of certain overdue federal tax debts beginning Spring 2017. Four private contractors have been selected to collect outstanding, inactive taxes under a new program authorized by a tax enacted by Congress in December 2015.

Each of the designated contractors are to respect taxpayer rights and adhere to the consumer protection provisions of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Per a recent press release, these contractors will be assigned to work on accounts that are no longer being actively worked by the agency. In addition, the press release states that each taxpayer and/or their representative will be given written notice that their account is being transferred to a private collection agency. The IRS will also issue a second, separate letter to the taxpayer and their representative confirming the transfer of their case as well.

If you owe federal taxes, and your account was placed in “uncollectible status” in the past, you may be contacted by one of these private collection contractors. If this occurs, please contact Dan Randall and Associates for assistance. We want to ensure that your rights are protected and that you are not a victim of a phone scammer or IRS impersonator.
